While it isn't necessary to have read the book to understand the movie, if you have read the book it makes the movie better, as someone who has read the book. This 1998 Best Picture (Academy Awards) winning romance stars Gwyneth Paltrow, who won Best Actress (Academy Awards) for the role and Joseph Fiennes as William Shakespeare and Viola, his true love who inspires him to write his most famous play, Romeo & Juliet. Not only is this a great film in general (it has love, comedy, drama, and murder) but if you know your Shakespeare, it's interesting to see how the film makers worked Shakespeare's other plays into the film.
